Pops Concert - Hurray for Hollywood

One of the last activities for the KS band is the Pops Concert...this year's was on May 3. Instead of just a concert, it's like a dinner show. The upperclassmen perform, while the freshmen serve the dinner, waiting on the guests. This year's theme was Hollywood, so the kids dress up according to the theme, the gym is decorated accordingly, and the music is chosen to fit the theme.

The seniors were dressed as main characters in movies, like Rocky, Mulan, Indiana Jones. The juniors and sophomores were dressed as secondary characters. The freshmen wore white shirts, dark pants, pink ties and visors (some resistance from the boys about the pink, but this is the senior class color, so they had to wear it).

Our role was to supervise the freshmen while they served the food. They were each assigned 1-2 tables of eight. They had to greet their guests, take pupu (boiled peanuts, soybeans, popcorn, chex mix) and drink orders (sodas, water, slush), and then serve salads, taro buns, dinner (homestyle chicken, rice, broccoli), and dessert (apple cobbler). It was a little chaotic at first (collect the dinner tickets or don't collect them? serve salads now or are they not ready yet?), but the kids did a great job. The guests were encouraged to leave tips, which will be pooled for the freshmen, to have a party or whatever they decide.
We actually had no idea what to expect, but we had a fun time. Ryan was really good at customer service...partly from his job at the zoo concession, but mostly from us eating out all the time! He's had a lot of firsthand experience, with his parents critiquing the service wherever we go.
