Darrell was finally released from the hospital today, on day 40.
In order to get released, he had to take charge of things himself and call his doctors (infectious disease and surgeon) since the primary care physician was dragging his feet, saying he had to clear it with the other doctors first. He was giving the excuse AGAIN about not being able to talk to the other doctors, when Darrell surprised him by telling him that HE had spoken with them and they said he could go home.
A couple of weeks ago, he developed some lumps on his left forehead and eyelid. I hadn't visited that Wednesday night because of a band meeting, but went early Thursday morning to see him and noticed it right away. He said he hadn't reported it because he thought it was an insect bite on his eyelid. But I called the nurse in right away to look at it, thinking the doctors had given him a different drug that he may have been allergic to. The lumps didn't go away and got more and more painful. The doctors took it as an allergic reaction too and blamed it on something he ate. He was miserable because of the pain, which even the pain pills he was given didn't help. My sister and brother-in-law were talking about it and suggested that he may have shingles. I called the infectious disease doctor and he agreed that this could be what Darrell had and called the hospital to prescribe anti-viral drugs. And he was better almost right away, after suffering for a week. Three doctors had seen him and couldn't diagnose shingles. My sister and brother-in-law "diagnosed" him after hearing a description of the symptoms over the phone. Unbelievable! And the doctors had reasons why they hadn't been able to recognize it: he didn't say he was in pain, it didn't look like shingles, blah, blah, blah.
We appreciate all that the doctors do, but it has been frustrating as well.

So glad that Darrell is finally home.
