waikiki beachside bistro

 

Ryan has had four jobs in the kitchen now...first was at the zoo in the concession stand, next was the Korean food place aat the Windward Mall food court, then Gyu-Kaku, then at Waikiki Beachside Bistro, which opened on April 28.  It's operated by the same company that runs the zoo concession so they remembered him and called him back.  It's located on Waikiki Beach, in the police substation on Kalakaua Avenue, next to the surfboard racks.  He really liked Gyu-Kaku but had to quit when it didn't work with his school schedule (and he also moved out to Pauoa and the restaurant is in Kaneohe).  He did pick up a holiday hire job at Brookstone at Ward Center with his tuba friend Ryan, but when January came, he wasn't working until Waikiki Beachside Bistro called. 

I went to visit him one weekday when they first opened and took the pic of him in his chef's coat.  Then Darrell and I went for lunch one Saturday when I had to work.  Ryan was so proud to make lunch for us.  I've had the "Kapahulu Burger" twice now, so yum.

Got one picture of him hard at work.  And they were featured in Hawaii UP! magazine, a free tourist publication.

Waikiki Beachside Bistro has been closed for three weeks for renovation so he's been out of work. But he had interviews at California Pizza Kitchen Ala Moana and Uncle's Fish Market and Grill at Pier 38. He was just hired at CPK; can't wait to visit him there since it's one of our favorite places to eat.

He decided to transfer from UH Manoa to Kapiolani Community College's Culinary Arts Program this fall.  He always enjoyed cooking at home and likes working in the kitchen.  He likes his classes so far (sanitation and food safety and food science and nutrition) because he can directly relate it to what he does at work.  He wasn't happy at Manoa because astronomy, history and psychology were more abstract.  He still wants to be a rock star but hopefully he'll find something else to be passionate about as well, if that doesn't work out.
