Working Man

It's spring break and Ryan just started his first job yesterday...working at the Honolulu Zoo concession! He worked in the gift shop for a little while yesterday and then was assigned to trash detail (picking up rubbish, cleaning off tables, and emptying trash around the snack bar), and he hated this part. He liked being in the gift shop and helping customers. So when he came home yesterday, he was so discouraged and disappointed in the job. He said there were some kids his age who made comments about him, how they were so glad they didn't have his job, picking up other people's sh*t. He felt humiliated and embarassed. But he had a better time today, working only in the gift shop and getting to drive the cart around. It's only part-time for the two week spring break, and maybe on weekends and during the summer, if he likes the job and if they like him. He was so excited about starting work...but maybe more about the earning money part than the actually working part. But hopefully it works out. His boss Rus is Darrell's friend and really nice, as are the other workers I met when I dropped his off yesterday morning.

Wow, can't believe he's old enough to work.
