7/18/09 1:36 pm Having a lazy Saturday…dark outside at midday, everyone inside is napping, may as well join them.
7/21/09 8:05 am Heading to my “part-time job”…ok, I’m here! Just had to walk to my home office :) Working on band stuff again today.
7/23/09 12:23 pm Husband is off to Vegas.
7/24/09 11:23 pm Carolyn has a busy day tomorrow…band camp registration, Alan & Nicole’s wedding, then back up to school to take Ryan to band camp.
7/25/09 10:32 pm Carolyn is so tired but it’s hard to sleep, it’s too quiet with hubby in Vegas and son at band camp. Missing my guys…
7/26/09 11:50 am Just had to clean off my car…whole drivers side and part of hood covered with bird sh*t, like a whole flock of birds/chickens decided to use my car for a toilet. Don’t know where the birds came from, no trees in sight. Yuck!
7/26/09 7:36 pm Carolyn is at band camp watching the first practice at Kunuiakea Stadium…rainy and windy evening. Band getting their field show coordinates for the first time.
7/26/09 9:37 pm It is so interesting
watching a band field show come together, step by step. They marched for 16 counts, stopped, re-set, then marched it again. They they added eight more steps, and so on until they had part of a field show. Amazing! Don’t know how they are able to find their way around the field.
7/27/09 (Did not post this to FB.) Monday night is a rough night at Band Camp. The kids are all tired from marching around all day in the hot sun (and several are sick or coming down with the flu bug). They are cranky and some are in tears. Ryan was really upset with his section leaders and his section tonight (especially the freshmen, who are totally new to marching). Went up to bring them drinks and snacks after practice but couldn’t even talk to him, he was that upset.
7/28/09 7:21 am Carolyn is feeling the effects of walking up/down all those stadium steps last night…getting old. No wait – I AM old, it’s my birthday today! :)
Went up to practice tonight. They started marching with their instruments and playing tonight. It’s starting to come together. I was relieved that Ryan is supporting the drum major, even calling out to the band when they weren’t listening to him, to get them to pay attention and follow the drum major’s call to set.
7/29/09 10:39 am Had a quiet birthday yesterday with lots of FB shout-outs – thanks to everyone. My guys didn’t remember until reminded late in the day…not surprising. Highlights: serenaded over phone by my former OWK gang (miss u guys!) and dinner with Jan & Craig at Liu’s Chop Suey at
beach in the afternoon and movie night tonight. Darrell came home today from Vegas bearing omiyage from Trader Joe’s and Hard Rock Hotel.
7/30/09 7:26 pm Up at school watching the band practice again. Beautiful evening!
7/31/09 6:32 pm Had lunch with Teri June to celebrate her birthday and watched “Departures” (“Okuribito” in Japanese) at Kahala Mall. Great movie.
Loved the cello music…tried to find it on iTunes but no luck. The movie was so touching…about a cellist who moves back to his hometown and begins work as someone who prepares the deceased for their coffins. It sounds gruesome, but it really wasn’t. The tag line for the movie title is “the gift of last memories,” and that is what he accomplishes with his job. The care he takes in preparing the bodies brings comfort to the families of the deceased.
8/1/09 10:07 pm Carolyn is glad Ryan is home from Band Camp. The kids put on a great show for the parents tonight! Their field show is called “”Rhapsody” and they play three pieces of music: Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” Rachmaninoff’s
“Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
8/2/09 5:10 pm Carolyn likes that there is nowhere we need to be today, nothing pressing that needs to be done (except wash the stinky clothes from Band Camp, but that’s done). And, yes, the clothes were very stinky after marching around in the hot sun for 16 hours a day.
8/3/09 5:21 pm Job-hunting today. Spent the whole morning and part of the afternoon online checking all the job websites. Applied for one job. I am either under- or over-qualified for everything else I saw. Got word about one job I had interviewed for, that they are “leaning towards another candidate who is a CPA with extensive hospitality experience.” And what am I, chopped liver? Whatever. So many people out there looking for jobs, employers have their choice.
8/5/09 10:52 pm Carolyn needs to do some hurricane prep tomorrow. :) Tropical Storm Enrique and Hurricane Felicia are on their way. Wasn’t the next big storm after Iniki named “Felicia” too? I remember thinking that I was recovered from Iniki, then feeling overwhelmed with panic the next year when another hurricane was coming. Luckily it didn’t hit.
8/5/09 6:33 pm “(500) Days of Summer” was great! Very sweet. Ryan said he really identified with the main character palyed by Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.
8/6/09 2:36 am Carolyn the insomniac just woke from a dream about a magical hotel with fountains that turned into whirlpools, jumping fish and a camel in the lobby…sounds like Vegas! It was very surreal. I finally fell asleep around 1-something, then I had this dream. When it ended, I suddenly woke up, like a movie had ended.
8/6/09 9:45 pm Costco crowd – it is usually this crowded
before opening? Took this photo with my phone today at Costco Iwilei. It usually opens at 10 am for exec and business members, but it was so crowded, with people and carts lined up to the parking lot. Guess everyone is stocking up for Hurricane Felicia, which will hopefully be downgraded by the time it reaches us or hopefully will bypass us all together.
8/6/09 3:44 pm If there is a nail on the road, it will jump up and find one of my tires. Not sure how many there have been already L My poor RX! Once I even had nails in two different tires at the same time.
8/6/09 5:43 pm Had breakfast at Sam Choy’s Breakfast-Lunch-and-Crab today – Sam Choy himself (who has lost so much weight that if I hadn’t seen him on TV the night before, I wouldn’t have recognized him), KS Headmaster Dr. Chun with Carole Kai, and the school “detention lady” (recognized by Ryan since he, uh, has met her before).
