christmas concert

This year's KS Christmas Concert was awesome!  Ryan performed with the Band and with his Music and Technology class.  Instead of his usual sousaphone, he played the contrabass (upright tuba) and he was first chair.  He also performed a solo during the "Christmas Fantasy" number.  Here he is with his friends John and Ka'ala after the performance.  Kamehameha really knows how to put on a show!  Everything went so smoothly, blending orchestra with Kamehameha Dance Company, Hawaiian Ensemble (hula) and Concert Glee with drama club, to make things more interesting.  'Olelo filmed the dress rehearsal on Friday and televised it a few times.  I'm so glad Ryan is in Band...of course, if he was in orchestra, we'd be there to watch, but somehow when the Band comes out, it's just so exciting!  A little sad that this is Ryan's last Christmas Concert.

Ryan played bass with his "Music and Technology" class when they performed their original song, "It's Christmas Time Again."  Ryan, John and Ka'ala are in band as well as the "Music and Technology" class so they had to be "quick-change artists" - the band performed first, then in the video you can see Ryan at the far right side of the stage, leaving during the applause so he could go backstage to change.  He had to strip off his band uniform (jacket, ruffle, cummerbund, pants, suspenders) to the white shirt and black pants he had on underneath, change his shoes from white band shoes to black dress shoes, put on a tie and get his mike pack tucked on for the bass, then walk out in front of the curtain to perform with the other group.  As soon as they were done, they had to go backstage and put on their band uniform again for the finale.  The girls in the group, Cayla and Mahina, are with Concert Glee, so they had to change into their uniforms for the finale as well.
