Music and Technology [KH04280 (Alt 11, 12)]
Semester, Prerequisite: Any one of the following courses (Advanced Guitar, Sinfonietta, Symphony Band, Hawaiian Ensemble, Concert Glee) and teacher recommendation and/or audition.
This course addresses the need for 21st century skills in the area of musical creativity, general music theory, instrumental proficiency, technological expertise, and project and time management that includes collaboration with peers and service learning. While some of these skills (digital music production, multimedia and internet proficiencies, etc.) are specific to 21st century tools that the Music Computer Lab setting can provide, some of these skills (creativity,
musical understanding, the ability to write and communicate clearly, and the ability to perform) are timeless. Some skills (time management, project management, and collaboration) will be used in many areas of life, from higher education to the 21st century workplace.
The group composed a Christmas song, "It's Christmas Time Again," which they debuted at the high school Christmas Concert last week. Then this week, an opportunity came up for them to perform on the "Perry and Price" radio show on Saturday! Michael W. Perry and Larry Price of KSSK host a breakfast show at Jimmy Buffett's at the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort every Saturday; live acts perform, there are guest interviews, and it's all broadcast on the radio.

Cayla, Mahina, Kaala and Christian did vocals, Josh and Christian were on guitar, Ryan played bass guitar, and John had a saxophone solo. They were all amazing! We are so proud of them! Hopefully I can post a video here later.
They recorded the song on CD as well and will be giving them out to those who make a donation to the Hawaii Food Bank.
Ryan's gone back and forth on whether he likes this class or not all semester. First he raved about it, then he was discouraged, then he loved it again. Bailey has been tough on them, but the results show in the work the kids have accomplished. And now Ryan thinks Bailey is the greatest teacher ever...yesterday he left his backpack in the classroom (which is a recording studio), not realizing that it had his course marshal uniform and pass were in it (he needed it this morning at 3:30 am when he went to work at the Honolulu Marathon). Instead of just leaving it at the school gate or somewhere else for Ryan to pick up, Bailey drove it to Windward Mall last night at 10:00 where Ryan was working. What a guy! Ryan was grateful (especially since he didn't have his mom yelling at him about it!).
So it's 6 am now on Sunday...got up at 2 am to get Ryan up and drop him off at his course marshal station on Kapiolani Blvd by 3:30 am. He is doing this for his "Literature of Competition" English class; his teacher volunteered the students from her two classes to help out at the Honolulu Marathon this morning. Ryan worked Friday night until 11 pm (mall closes at 10 pm now until Christmas), got up early to get to Perry & Price this morning, recorded the Christmas song and his course project at the "Music & Tech" lab at school after that, went straight to work until after 11 pm, went to bed, then I got him up at 2:30 am. Going to head out to pick him up soon. He'll rest a bit then head back to school for more recording, followed by work again. Luckily he really likes his job and people he works with. And he's seeing dollar signs from getting his first paycheck and is always calculating how much more he's going to make so he can buy stuff he wants. Hopefully he won't be too tired tomorrow to study for his final exams. Half of his senior year is almost done!
