We were sitting with some Maui football parents and yelled and screamed and clapped and were pretty boisterous; they were really quiet at first, then they got into it too! It was such an awesome game! We heard that the Baldwin team has been undefeated since 2004, but they were losing most of the game...the KS Maui team did great! They were winning up until the very end, then lost 26-27. It was too bad they lost, but considering Baldwin had such a strong team, they played an amazing game.
Instead of having the band play the fight song, "Imua Kamehameha," at the beginning of the game, the football team chants it while doing a "haka" (traditional Maori dance).
One of our band moms who came to sit with us was telling me later that she overheard one of the Maui parents talking on the phone about us...I thought, oh no, I wonder if they complained. But she said that lady told her friend on the phone to come sit with us because it was so much fun! I think the band really added to the game, made the team play well.
After the game was over, the football team came to stand in front of the band to thank them. Some girls were taking pictures with Brock, the drum major, like he was a celebrity. A Maui parent stopped us outside and thanked us for coming. And someone asked if we could come back the following week for their homecoming game! So I think our kids made an impression on Maui.
