We decided to go to Haleiwa Joe's at Haiku Gardens for dinner, which is right near our house. Karen, Neal and Nicky were in town and came to join us. The restaurant opened at 4 (usually they open at 5) so Jan and Craig went down to put our name in for a table (it's always first come, first served), but because they don't reserve any tables, unless your whole party is there ready to eat, you have to wait.
We got there at 5 and KNn and Ryan (who was working his catering job in Kailua) got there later, so we had to wait until the people who were all there earlier to vacate their tables. But it worked out. The food was good as usual and the company was great!
Thanks for Jan and Craig for getting there so early so we could get a table!
After dinner, we went home and Ryan opened his gifts from Aunty Janny and Uncle Craig since he would be working on Christmas Day. He was happy with his gifts from Japan…a spoon-like tool that he can use to decorate his dishes with sauces and a new knife, a 240 mm Gyuto from TDI in Kappabashi.
He had actually just bought a similar one recently but a server at his catering job dropped it and chipped the edge so he was happy with a new one.
He promptly dug out a potato from the fridge and started slicing with his new knife!
Grandpa wearing the new vest we got him...
Glad we were able to get together since Ryan worked Christmas Day.
