Darrell lost his wallet February 1. He had gone out after work and thought he brought it home, but we couldn't find it (hence the cleaning I needed to do on Super Bowl Sunday). He looked in the truck, at work, it was nowhere to be found. We figured it might be somewhere at home since none of the credit cards had been used (he once left his wallet on the top shelf of the closet, doesn't know why). He got a duplicate license this past Saturday (then promptly lost it at home on Sunday, sigh). But after we got home Saturday, he got a letter in the mail from the Honolulu Police Dept Evidence Dept saying that the wallet had been turned in! Don't have any details, but some good samaritan apparently turned it over to the police. Hopefully everything will be intact once he picks it up, but that's amazing!
Contrast to this experience is Ryan's experience with Craigslist. Last week, he posted an ad on Craigslist to sell his hardly-ever-used Fender amplifier because he wants to get a new one that will work better for him. He got some legit replies - mostly offers to trade the amp for a Kamaka ukulele or a guitar, but also spoke extensively with others who asked a lot of questions. But he also got some scammers. The reason why the shippers amount is a little bit expensive is because they would also be shipping some goods for me from Japan to my house in Wyoming ,so that is why i want you to help me in cashing the check.
DUH! We're not stupid. But Ryan wouldn't know about this scam. He got maybe three others that were similar, but hadn't gotten into as much detail as this.
The sad thing is that people will fall for the scams...
Found out there's a website to check out scams and report them: www.ic3.gov. Good info. Heard there's a potential "storm virus" out there now...you'll get an email telling you someone sent you a valentine. When you click on the link to view it, WHAM, you are connected to some network where someone else controls your computer and sends out spam email to other computers. And I was just looking on www.hallmark.com, thinking I would send out e-card valentines! Maybe there's no sense, since people might be too afraid to open them! If all these evil people could spend half the time they spend cooking up ways to scam people to do something worthwhile instead, we'd have a cure for cancer already!
