Honolulu city lights trolley

New Eagle Cafe  is a restaurant we go to pretty regularly (I always have the French dip sandwich with fries and "green river" lemon lime drink).  I saw last year that they offered a free trolley ride to see the city lights at Honolulu Hale (City Hall) and downtown but I waited too long and we didn't make it.

This year, since our niece Ehu and her family live here on Oahu, I thought it would be fun to go together since the kids would probably enjoy the ride.  I called early and got us dinner and trolley reservations for December 23.  At the last minute, Ehu's parents Candy and Oboy came in from Molokai so they joined us.

It worked out great!  We had dinner then jumped on the trolley at the back of the restaurant.  A staffer even brought out fresh baked cookies and passed them out on the trolley.

It was raining a bit at the start but then it cleared up during the half hour ride.  Honolulu Hale was all aglow with lights and decorations.  We just drove by but there were tons of people there checking out the displays, eating hot malasadas from the Leonard's truck, and riding trains and other small rides.



Iolani Palace was lit up with red and green Japanese lanterns and looked so pretty.  There was even a small horse-drawn carriage all lit up like Cinderella's that was parked by the Hawaii State Library, waiting for customers.

I'm sure the driver could have made it more fun by playing Christmas music louder and/or making us sing, but it was a nice ride.  Definitely want to do this again next year!  It was a great way to get in the holiday spirit.
