12/27/07 Day 2 of KS Band Tour

Day 2 started off with us calling all the boys' rooms to get them up - room 1 had Keola, Scotty, Christian and Nick, room 2 had Brandon, Brennan, Ryan K and Ian, room 3 had Ryan A, Cory, Mano and Treston. Breakfast for the group was in the ballroom - the hotel staff wore aloha shirts (yellow/red-USC or Roosevelt High School colors, but the thought was there!), served spam, Portugese sausage, white rice, scrambled eggs, fruit and pastries. They even had shoyu packets! As with all Kamehameha activities, they started off with a prayer by Kahu Cordell Kekoa and everyone singing the Doxology. I wish I had videotaped one of the mornings...the kids singing the Doxology is wonderful, they all sing parts so the harmony gives chicken skin. After breakfast, the kids headed out to the practice at Knott's Berry Farm's parking lot across the street. One of our boys had to have a nebulizer treatment so I had to take him to the nurses' room, and then had to walk him to practice. We had to walk outside the hotel, towards Knott's, then under the road to the parking lot on the other side.

Someone went to pick up 300 Subway sandwiches for lunch for the kids, and after lunch we packed up the buses again and headed to Universal Studios. This is a photo of the kids when we first got there. Even though most had never been there before, when I offered to have us stick together and go on the tram tour, I found out quickly that no one wants to stick with the chaperones, and especially not anyone's parents, when friends/classmates are around! So Darrell and I went off on our own to go on the studio tour. It was a long wait to ride the tram and the ride itself is much longer than I remembered. They added some new things, so it was different, but it got soooo cold on the open tram, that we decided to just to find some place warm to eat. We left the park and went to the shopping area, where we had dinner at Wolfgang Puck's. The food was good, but the main thing was that it was nice and WARM! We had told the boys to check in with us after a couple of hours, and they all started calling in while we were on the tram. They were very responsible. Even at Disneyland or Knott's, they would call in to let us know they were ok, even though we didn't ask them to. They were also very good about getting to the meeting places on time, and we were always the first on the bus, usually waiting for the other groups and their chaperones. We were lucky that we had good boys; there were groups where kids went off on their own, even though they knew they were supposed to stay in groups of 3 or more. We survived Day 2!
